Carbon Footprint

Howard Tenens believes the logistics sector has an important role to play if the UK is to meet its European carbon reduction targets. We have taken the lead by reducing impacts within the supply chain and implementing measures to reduce fuel and energy consumption wherever possible.

In 2009 we carried out a carbon footprint analysis of our whole business. In 2010 this has risen as a result of securing new business to 14,076.1 tonnes; this included all direct emissions from burning fuel and indirect emission from consumption of electricity.

During the year, our vehicle fleet travelled 9,030,358 miles and the consumption of fuel to cover this mileage produced 10,387.6 tonnes of carbon dioxide, which equates to 1.15kg per mile.

As a Group we have 3,004,220 square feet of warehousing space; the associated operations use energy for heat and power and fuel to run forklift trucks. The carbon resulting from this area of the business was 3,688.5 tonnes, which equates to 1.23kg per square foot.

The Group will report these figures annually to demonstrate efficiencies or the sustainability of any expansion of the business. (In 2010 Defra updated and increased all carbon reporting factors. The above statement uses the new higher figures. If 2009 figures were used a more substantial reduction would have been seen.)
