Howard Tenens' Voltaic Sustainable Building
The new Voltaic building, located in Dagenham incorporates many environmentally efficient and sustainable initiatives. The 233,000 sq ft building will help Howard Tenens as we strive to reduce the impact of our operations on the environment, with the total savings that Voltaic should be able to realise approximating to 121.5 tonnes of carbon annually.
The savings are achieved through a number of measures. Photvoltaic roof panels provide energy from a renewable source and will save an estimated 7.13 tonnes of CO2 each year. Sky lights cover 15% of the roof, compared to the industry norm of 10%, which equates to the optimum usage of natural light without damaging products stored in the warehouse.
The 'Earth's Energy' will be utilised by the ground source heat pump to supply heating and cooling systems for the offices and solar thermal collectors will deliver free hot water in the summer and create substantial hot water savings in the winter.

Rainwater is to be collected from the roof and will harvest and conserve up to 400,000 litres of water annually. Low water use appliances have been installed and the harvested rainwater will be used for grey water recyling in toilet areas.
The interior of the building features sustainable timber and recycled and natural materials, and organic paints will reduce toxic emissions and deliver a healthier working environment.
