Stroud, Glos. July 2009 – Howard Tenens launched its low carbon vehicle programme at this year’s Cart Marking ceremony at the Guildhall in London. Howard Tenens, Ben Morris Group Sales and Marketing Director, presented a Mercedes Benz Actros converted to run on natural gas and diesel using the Hardstaff patented OIGI dual fuel technology.
Howard Tenens has always focused on increasing fuel efficiency to save carbon emissions and minimise costs. Initiatives to date include driver training, use of vehicle telematics and the introduction of double deck trailers.
It was recognised that a step change was required to reduce carbon emissions further and after discussions with Mercedes Benz and providers of alternative fuel technology, Howard Tenens has commenced the introduction of low carbon dual fuel vehicles across the fleet. Catherine Crouch, who heads up Tenens Environmental explained “A dual fuel engine burns diesel and gas simultaneously; we expect to see substantial improvements in terms of air quality exceeding Euro V standards and Carbon emissions will be reduced by around 20%.”
Howard Tenens first gas fuelling station will be installed at its Andover depot next month with a view to rolling out this initiative to the other depots within the Group. Discussions are underway with other interested parties with a view to making fuelling stations available for other local gas vehicle projects.
Catherine Crouch added “It is an ambition of the Howard Tenens Group to replace compressed natural gas (CNG) with biomethane, a renewable alternative to CNG produced from waste organic matter. This will cut carbon emissions further and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.”
