Howard Tenens is continually reviewing ways to become more efficient in everything from route planning and vehicle loading to alternative fuels and truck modifications. Rail transport and shipping management services have also been expanded to help customers to reduce their carbon footprint.

Howard Tenens has always focused on increasing fuel efficiency to save carbon emissions and minimise costs. Previous initiatives include driver training, use of vehicle telematics and the introduction of double deck trailers.

Recognising a step change was required to reduce carbon emissions further, a project commenced in 2009 to introduce low carbon dual fuel vehicles to the fleet.

A dual fuel engine burns diesel and gas simultaneously. The Howard Tenens’ vehicles are running on a mixture of compressed natural gas and diesel. This provides substantial improvements in terms of air quality reducing NOx by 60%, carbon monoxide by 98%, exhaust noise is reduced by 3 decibels and particulates meet Euro 4 and 5 standards.

It is an ambition of the Howard Tenens Group to replace compressed natural gas with biomethane, a renewable alternative to CNG produced from waste organic matter. This will cut carbon emissions further and reduce dependency on fossil fuels.
